How to Use MyBib

MyBib is a citation generator proven to be the most user-friendly and effective that we found for free. As a reminder, a citation generator is a program or a site that uses information from a source and turns it into a citation in any format available on the platform. MyBib has many options and functions, so here is a breakdown of those and how to put them into use:

1. Go to MyBib and click "start new project" in the upper left corner, right below MyBib's logo.

  • A project in MyBib is basically when you start a new paper, so when you start a new project, you're organizing your reference list for the paper you're working on inside this site.

2. Once you start a new project, you'll see the following screen, then just click "Add Citation" in the upper left.

3. After that, you'll see this screen:

Each tab is made to enter the data for every source you want to cite. Click the type of source and enter the info that the site suggests:

  • For websites, you need to paste the source link.
  • For books, you need to enter the book title or the ISBN.
  • For journals, you need the DOI* or article title.

* A DOI (digital object identifier) is basically a number that links a source to its location on the Internet. Follow the next steps to find the article's DOI:

  • If a journal publisher uses DOIs, they will usually add the DOI somewhere on the article's first page. Look for the DOI on the article's first page, above the abstract, next to the author's names or info, or in the header or footer.
Watch the video below to see how to find a DOI

PRO TIP: If you don't have the info of the source you are using, you can click "enter manually" and add the info you have yourself so the site can create the citation later.

 4. Once you paste this information, MyBib will give you a list of sources. Make sure to check them until you find the one you need to cite, then click it, and read all the source data that MyBib compiled to make sure everything is okay.

5. Your screen should look like the one below (note: this is a journal I used as an example). Make sure to click "Save" in the blue square below once you are sure the data is correct.

6. You're done! Your citation is ready. Once you save it, you'll see this screen:

  • You can change the format for the one you need in the upper center of the screen (see the red arrow).
  • You can copy the whole citation by clicking on the citation itself.
  • You can also copy the in-text citation for each reference (see red square).
  • You can keep adding citations to each project clicking "Add Citation," and once you have them all ready, you can download your references clicking "Download References" (see green square). You can download them in a word file and it will be even formatted already!

Pro Tips

  • You can name your MyBib projects based on your assignment's names and complete your reference list inside the site and download them all together once you finish your paper/assignment.
  • You can color-code your projects to avoid confusion.
  • You can delete your old projects, create folders of projects for each course you're taking, duplicate projects, and even merge several projects together if you ever need to.

NOTE: You can do all this by clicking the three vertical dots:
